  • One thing to consider is how to incorporate understorey LAI. Perhaps you could keep the understorey you clear around each hemiphoto point and either (1) scan all the leaves to calculate their area or (2) weigh them then apply an SLA estimate to get their area. If you know the ground area cleared this will provide direct estimates of understorey LAI.

  • Leaf physiologyFine litter fallUnderstanding the carbon cycle of Andean Forests

    Hi all,

Does anyone know if there is any data from the Andean gradient on carbon, nitrogen and phosphorus content of dead leaves/leaf litter?

  • Understanding the carbon cycle of Andean Forests

Hi all, some people are writing a review about ecological patterns with elevation and are look for photos from low, mid and high elevations from a tropical site as examples to put in the paper. I found these three photos from the Andes gradient. I was wondering: (1) does anyone recognize the high and mid photos as theirs so that they can be appropriately acknowledged (the low photo is definitely mine) and (2) does anyone have any better ones?

    Hi all,

Check out this interesting new paper about stem CO2 efflux, from one of the current sites in Peru:

  • Ingrowth coresRAINFOR methodologies

Hi Terhi, Good question about the ingrowth cores. There's certainly nothing magical about the 4 retrievals in my paper. If anything, it would be nice to have them in a bit longer (5, 6) just to reassure ourselves that the production in the 5th 3-month interval is similar to the first interval, which it should be if the soil fertility/texture change is not a big problem. It would be good to change holes every once in a while, the challenge then will be to align the production estimates from the old set of holes with the new ones (i guess... More
