Methodology

Stem respiration

We use the EGM gas analyzer (PP Systems, UK) on 30 trees at each site to measure trunk respiration on a monthly basis. We affixed a permanent 5 cm plastic collar sealed with xxx to the tree trunk (above the bark) at an approximate height of 1.3m on each tree. The sample trees were evenly distributed through the plot, with approximately one tree chosen per subplot. Wood respiration is a function of tree growth rate. We therefore scale our plot level wood respiration by plot level growth rate based on a regression between growth rate and wood respiration. We scale our tree respiration to total woody respiration per hectare by using the plot census data to calculate total woody area for the 1 ha census plot.

Hi All,

I've just returned from a month in Gabon and am very happy to report that all 6 plots (2 in each of the 3 sites) are now fully installed and March/April will be the first month where all measurements are taken simultaneously within all plots. All three sites now have a team of 2 people working on data collection and analysis. During Yadvinder’s week-long stay, we visited all sites and completed installation of all under- and above-canopy weather stations at the same time as successfully dodging charging elephants. I’ve uploaded some photos from this trip – enjoy!

Best,
Sam
