Methodology

Specific Leaf Area

Specific leaf area (SLA, leaf area:leaf dry mass) is estimated by collecting leaves from the 11 evenly numbered litterfall traps (there are 25 litterfall traps per plot). The leaves are stored in plastic bags to avoid desiccation, photographed with a digital camera or a scanner, and dry weighed.

Leaf area is calculated with (ImageJ) [http://rsb.info.nih.gov/ij/] freeware. SLA is calculated as total one-sided leaf area divided by total dry mass per point.
